In a poor municipality in Odessa, Ukraine we created a left-turn lane at a busy intersection without any roadwork and solved a major traffic jam by repainting the road and adding a one-way traffic light.

Even the best computer software isn't flexible enough to handle every contingency; difficult problems usually require unorthodox solutions. No software package could have suggested a layout like the one below. A 40-minute peak-time traffic jam was removed overnight.

Sometimes, it is necessary to bend the rules. To remove this choke point, we introduced left-side driving on a right-side road, which we made legal by splitting the street in two.

Even small changes can require months of testing. This circle used to have round-the-clock traffic jams in two or three directions. By closing one left turn, we were able to eliminate the jam completely.

Downtown pedestrians often block turns. Our concept of deep crossing solves that problem:
